Nithview – Tea Room Mural

We channeled our inner Lords and Ladies to create a British High Tea Sensory-scapes, the perfect spot for social gatherings, “British trivia nights”, Tea after Church Services, Mother’s Day or birthday parties or other fancy celebrations. What a great spot to put on a fascinator and talk about the “Royals”. Invite the Grandchildren to a “Tea Party” event, a fun fashion show, or simply have a viewing of your favourite British drama.

Nithview – Tinkering Shed Mural

Tinkering is both a pastime and perseverating habit for people experiencing dementia. It can however be transformed into opportunities to keep hands busy through activities such sorting small parts, tinkering with mechanical things, creating arts and crafts, painting and potting plants.  There is no better setting for such activities than the “Tinkering” Sensory-scape mural.  This mural is customized to fit any space and we love to add reminiscing  elements with a local flare such as posters, license plates and historical artifacts.

The mural is bright and cheerful, we love it because the men seem to gravitate. Rich in visual and tactile stimulation this is the perfect place for a tool bench, classic car memorabilia and gardening  items.

Westwood Home – Custom Sports Themed Design

It was a pleasure to craft custom sports theme murals for a men’s Supportive Housing Home in Ontario. Sensory-scapes worked with staff and residents to create a theme and customize it to reflect the interests of the residents and to fit the size and style of the room and existing furniture.

This mural added character and personality a basic rec-room, transforming it into a “Mancave” complete with basketball, baseball, hockey and vintage car garage themes incorporated into all four walls of the room. The space is centered with a billiards table and includes an air hockey table.  In this case, Sensory-scape murals created an environment within a home for very deserving residents.

Lancaster – Retro Soda Shop

The Retro Soda Shop is a fabulous mural for reminiscing about the “good old days”. It is the perfect spot to host ice cream socials and BBQ’s.  It is a great backdrop for Father’s Day events, a 1950’s theme day with popular music from the decade, or to simply chat with the guys about their favourite cars from the era.

In this home, Sensory-scapes transformed the Food Service Manager’s office into the Soda Shop (the theme made sense) and now the residents love to gather and hang out in this area.

Governor’s Walk 1950s Retro Kitchen

Kitchens are known as the “heart of the home”, a place for family, friends and activity that is steeped with sensory rich memories. This retro custom Sensory-scape mimics a 1950’s kitchen and includes props such as an original Formica table with chrome and vinyl chairs, vintage baking tools and cooking props as well as a vintage apron and cookbooks. We included a 1954 tin recipe box and encourage families to bring in their favourite recipes to add to the collection. Governor’s Walk Covered Porch

The Covered Porch sensory scape is a year-round favourite that allows residents to feel as if they are experiencing the outdoors.

Reminiscing Hair Salon

Most Long Term Care homes have a salon and offer hairdressing services. Personal care from having your nails polished, to having your hair washed is a sensory rich experience that contributes to positive feelings, increased self esteem and social engagement.  Regrettably, the hair salon is often overlooked when thinking about sensory spaces yet it is a place most residents visit frequently.

Sensory-scapes transformed this hair salon into a retro 1950’s style Barber Shop and Beauty Parlor complete with sensory stimulation, 3Dimensional props, and Montessori based activities to keep the seniors engaged and sitting while they are being “styled”.  The salon space can be used for pampering, aesthetics, reminiscing or aroma therapy sessions when the stylist is not working.

Nithview Home Dining Room Murals

Beyond nutrition meal time for most people is a time for social engagement, steeped with sensory stimulation and often a trigger for memories. It is important that dining areas feel like home and encourage residents to relax and enjoy meals. Murals can transform a dining area into an old country kitchen, a terrace with a view, a 1950’s diner, or a quaint café.  Dining room murals are easy-to-clean and can add the look of furniture without taking up valuable floor space.

This rural Ontario LTC home transformed 3 dining areas into “Country-rustic” farmhouse -style dining areas. We took care and pleasure to add quilts, country decor, and even highlighted local landscapes and buildings (the local public library) through the window murals.

Errinrung LTC Tub Rooms

Tub rooms and spas are areas in the home that every residents visits on a regular basis. Murals and Ceiling-scape tiles easily transform a tub room into a room-with-a-view. In this Thronbury Ontario home, we transitioned two tub rooms into boat house shelters overlooking a view of the Thornbury Marina and Pier, a view many of the residents grew up looking at. The murals calm and distract residents otherwise anxious during bathing and give the staff discussion points.  Adding aroma therapy and playing a CD with sounds of water, waves and seagulls added to the sensory element creating a real oasis in the tub room. Tub rooms can transition  into luxurious spas with the use of water resistant murals.
